This Man Creates Works of Art that Tell Time

This artist and craftsman has always loved clocks. In his hometown back in Rockford, Illinois, James Borden has collected an incredible number of timepieces. While studying abroad, Borden and a friend were inspired to build their own clocks. Having taken courses in history, art, and science, Borden was able to integrate all of his knowledge and experience into building beautiful, larger-than-life creations.

It was great for me because it involved integrating ideas, not studying just one,” says Borden. “You saw how all these different areas of thought connect with each other—just like a clock, which involves scientific principals of laws in motion, and physics and design.”

30 years later, Borden is now known for his Timeshapes business that sells custom made works. His creations feature intricate gears, levels and wheels hand-crafted from cherry and walnut wood and have been featured within various museums, hotels and hospitals.
